The “usual suspects” in Jackson Square, and Royal Street. Guest Star on the broom, Dr. Love !

Most street street musicians and artists in new Orleans performs where the tourists are, so they can make a living selling CDs and making a few tips while they do what they love. Beside the “first French Quarter stop” of Jackson Square, right in front of the St. Louis Cathedral, next, comes Royal Street, where most galleries are. There you will find performers lined up during busy weekends. Some of the musicians and artists line show up to hold their spot the night before just to make sure they have the prime spot available on crowded weekends!

My Photos Published in National Geographic Traveler

These two pictures taken at the 2011 Satchmo Summerfest second line have been published on the December 2013/January 2014 of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELER print issue (above), and iPad article, full spread (shot below). Not only the National Geographic publication included on their article “Best of the world 2014” the City of New Orleans, but they placed it first on its list! Pictured above from left to right are Jennifer Jones, Selma Heraldo, Louis Armstrong’s beloved neighbor and friend, and Yoshio Toyama followed by the Treme Brass Band in front of the St. Augustine Church in Treme. I was indeed very happy to hear from Yoshio that he particularly loved the image with Selma very much, since he knew her very well and wasn’t expecting her to briefly join the second line with him that day. Selma Heraldo, the main living link to Louis Armstrong, sadly passed a few months later that year.

I usually love for my images a muted and slightly unsaturated palette of colors, but when the light is just right, and the contrast screams at me, black and white conveys in my opinion a more timeless and mysterious feel to the photographs, and in this case, on these shots below, I think black and white worked just fine! Yes the French Quarter was very cold and wet by the way!

For some strange reasons I keep on getting attracted by the Maison LeMonnier. It’s really my European (Italian!) descent that I think drags me here. When shooting in the French Quarter I somehow end up shoot this corner house! Something about the paint job, its balconies and shutters that really, and I mean, REALLY, remind me my early life growing up in Italy…I truly love this building which they still call the skyscraper since it was the very first three stories high building in the French Quarter.

While walking in the French Quarter very bright and early, heard some music and I practically bumped into Pete Fountain with his marching band and float! He was ready to be getting interviewed by a local News Station WWLT and was nice enough to strike a pose for me.

I have been drooling for a quite awhile now for these types of images and have been wanting to take them facing downward to Canal St. in New Orleans at twilight. Canal Street is very unique, so long and wide, but it is also very hard to shoot unless your are up high, and I mean way up there. These shots here were taken from the top of the World Trade Center building at the foot of Canal Street where the view is just incredible and beyond description; you will be surprised also how strong the northerly winds blows when it gets funneled between the rows of buildings on Canal St.! On Thursday, October 28, 2010, the city of New Orleans lost a great man and a wonderful musician. The world will not be the same without Walter Payton Jr.

Born and raised in New Orleans’ Uptown neighborhoods, Walter’s first brushes with Preservation Hall came in the early sixties when Allan Jaffe would lend him his sousaphone for gigs with the Eureka, Apollo, and Olympia Brass Bands. After receiving advanced instruction from Robert Rohe at Xavier College, Walter went on to perform on several hit records, including Lee Dorsey’s “Working in a Coal Mine” and Aaron Neville’s “Tell It Like It Is.”

Walter Payton also served as a teacher in the New Orleans public school system for twenty-five years, where he had the opportunity to instruct a young Ben Jaffe in the ways of the bass.

Ladies and Gentlemen I’m very glad to announce my latest fine art photography work shot on Canal Street in New Orleans!

Since I have been waiting quite a while (weeks!) to get this photo done I’m very pleased with the results! Not only the magic twilight and angle makes the photo quite unique, but the never seen subject itself is a newer one that I have never seen done here! I got a little soaked and had to be a contortionist to get to shoot this image, but as always, hard work always pays off and as matter of facts I can’t stop staring at it! It is available as an open edition print at nolaPIC.com (my online fullfillment website). This killer New Orleans skyline image features Canal Street with the bright red streetcar we all know or at least have heard of, in the foreground, and the central business district in the background. Prints of Uncle Lionel Batiste & Oswald Jones – Treme Brass Band members

During the pre Super Bowl pep rally Second Line held in New Orleans on Saturday February 6, 2010 I had the chance to take a few great pictures of “Uncle” Lionel Batiste while he was at the French Market with the Treme Brass Band. New Orleans is full of characters, but Uncle Lionel definitely stands out! Somebody…I forgot who, said about him, “we gonna miss him, when WE die!”

Look out for the new HBO series Treme which will premiere on April 11 2010 and will feature among man local New Orleans musicians, the Treme Brass Band!

“Uncle” Lionel Batiste is a jazz and blues musician and singer from New Orleans, Louisiana. Born on February 1st, 1931, he began in music career at the age of 11 playing bass drum with the Square Deal Social & Pleasure Club. He is currently the bass drummer, vocalist and assistant leader of the Treme Brass Band; he is known for his kazoo playing as well. He also sings, and has recorded a cd as a vocalist. Besides inspiring younger musicians with his playing, he serves as a role model to many of them: trumpeter Kermit Ruffins calls Batiste his “total influence,” saying that Batiste “taught [him] how to act, how to dress, how to feel about life.” Internationally, Batiste has served as leader of the daily Moldejazz parade since 2000. He is arguably New Orleans most loved uncle!
